Dont Sacrifice Do Charity

In the on-going Kerala Flood rescue and rehabilitation scene there has been many Whatsapp / Twitter messages doing the rounds, most are for asking people to donate and help the victims with basic necessities for people in rescue camps and also for people who have been isolated in the floods and find it difficult to arrange for daily needs especially when, when there is no electricity and easy transport available to major mass of the people.

Many messages are also contrary to these, saying people don’t need these stuff and they are doing absolutely fine and just send electricians, plumbers and other helps and they should be good in a week or so, which is surprising not because the guy seems to think that all is well but because the guy has the audacity to propagate the lie when the entire world knows the extent of damage and distress caused by the deluge.

One of the most surprising message I have seen out of these is the one asking Muslims to desist from doing Kurbani (Sacrifice) on Eid ul Adha ( Bakri Eid) and instead donate that money to flood victims and the message also gives a crude calculation, where it says there are roughly 20 Cr Muslims in India and out of those even 1 Cr do Kurbani and if a single goat cost 10,000 INR then the amount accumulated would be 10,000  Cr for the victims.

First of all I was a little taken a back and then I thought probably it’s not a bad idea and then when I was thinking more about it I searched and found the National Action Plan Report of Government of India on Goats and going through it I could see what this festival of sacrificing animal actually means for India and its farmers.

The report says that India occupies first space in terms of goat population. Chevon (Goat meat) is widely eaten in India since ancient times and goat milk use has been consistently increasing and in fact research being done on it to see goat milk uses, therapeutically and for medicinal purposes. It further goes on to say that Goat husbandry provides glimpses of future hope for employment generation, nutritional security and prosperity to the millions of small and marginal farmers in the country

It further elaborates its Role in Rural in Indian Economy and says Among all species of farm animals, Goats have the widest ecological range and have been poor people’s most reliable livelihood resource since their domestication during Neolithic Revolution about 10 millennia ago. Goat plays a significant role in providing supplementary income and livelihood to millions of resource poor farmers and landless laborers of rural India. Small ruminant rearing ensures self-employment and acts as a cushion in distress situations like drought and famine.

Goat Population in India: From the goat population of 135 Million in 2012 more than 33 million are either farmed by the resource-poor marginal farmers or by rural poor households which acts as a supplementary income to them.

Also the distribution of goat population in India is as given below

The largest population is in Rajasthan which for its peculiar landscape indulge in more supplementary farming and rely less on traditional farming.

Now the conclusion is, these farmers during the month leading to Eid ul Adha travel to hubs (mandis) located in major cities and sell their produce at premium rates which helps them earn enough to supplement their household for the rest of the year plus to start another kidding (new crop of goats).

So the person starting the message and then those circulating it has perhaps forgotten to inform you that the money actually will not be donated by the Muslims per say but the poor and marginal farmers of India who are already reeling under farm distress, bad crop and rising agri crisis.

The money as it is has been kept aside by the muslim who wants to sacrifice and the amount goes to government relief fund or the farmers is just a choice and religiously it should have very less difference because the purpose it is catering is the same. The sacrifice is not actually of the animal but it is of the hard earned money he has taken out from his earnings to make a sacrifice and distribute the meat to relatives, friends and the needy. The skin is given away for free which helps leather industry, the guts and other unusable parts are buried and thus the sacrifice in totality a charity in a well celebrated form.

DeMon-2

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement when he said do not judge my government by the demonetisation decision only says a lot, even goes on to reveal how big a mess the Demonetisation in November 2016 was. The increase in Suspicious Transaction rose astonishingly by 480 Per cent post demonetisation says Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Report that is an increase of 3.22 Lakh such cases in just a year in banking and other financial channels. The annual spike registered in 2016-17 is the highest since 2012. The Reserve Bank of India’s annual report for 2016-17 told a similar story. “At the Reserve Bank’s currency verification and processing system, during 2015-16, there were 2.4 pieces of FICNs of Rs 500 denomination and 5.8 pieces of FICNs of Rs 1000 denomination for every million pieces notes processed; which rose to 5.5 pieces and 12.4 pieces, respectively, during the post-demonetisation period,” it said

The banks, including those in the private, public and cooperative sectors, and other financial institutions collectively generated 400 per cent more suspicious transaction reports (STRs) at over 4.73 lakh such dossiers during 2016-17, the report said. This, had a link to demonetisation of two high value currencies of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 which was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the night of November 8, 2016.
“A noteworthy growth was also seen in the number of counterfeit currency reports (CCRs) which increased from more than 4.10 lakh in 2015-16 to over 7.33 lakh in 2016-17, which may also be attributed to the demonetisation exercise,” it said.
The latest figure is the highest ever since the CCRs were first generated in the year 2008-09. CCRs are “transaction based reports” and they are generated only when a fake Indian currency note (FICN) is detected.

The STRs, that are generated when a transaction either indicates that it has been made in circumstances of unusual or unjustified complexity or appears to have no economic rationale or bona fide purpose, also saw a record high rate of detection during the same period and an over 400 per cent jump from the comparative period just before demonetisation.

“The number of STRs received in 2016-17 is 4,73,006 which is more than four times as compared to 2015-16 and this increase is attributed to demonetisation exercise…,” the report said.

It added that some volume of the increase in the number of STRs can also be credited to the outreach steps taken by the agency in sensitising banks and others to comply with the rule of mandatorily filing these reports under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

All of this only goes on to say that many bad things are happening to Indian economy and it is a result of very very bad things which were done to our economy when it was in its revival phase.
Although there were hundreds of goal post shifting a day just after demonetisation by the government one of those which was said repeatedly was black money eradication. Eradication never happened but on the contrary it has now multiplied and hoarders now find it much easy to hoard large amount due to ₹2000 denomination currency easy availability. This has resulted into recent cash crunch which was also resulted due to faulty RBI policy where RBI was ineffective on pressing public and private banks to recalibrate its ATMs to dispense ₹200. This created a shortage of currency and devoid the public of its own money.

Blame it on Thee

If for everything that is happening only opposition is responsible then it raises the question that, how powerful is the opposition and how powerless is the dispensation?

For certain issues it can be a strategic move to blame the opposition or its leaders to buy time for course correction or withdraw from the situation but it can only be used very sensitively and sparsely. Overuse of this will give public a general view that either the government is playing into the hands of opposition or the elected leaders lacks the teeth to make things done and it’s failed in taming opposition even when the public has put their faith in them and elected them.

Lately BJP has been blaming Congress and its president for everything that is supposedly happening in India, wrong things obviously. It started with the JNU protest and thereafter stone pelting incidents in Kashmir and one after another all the BJP Govt downfalls were squarely blamed on Rahul Gandhi. This exercise was also paralleled by statements trying to dwarf the Congress President by quickly dismissing his statement and this would be done by cabinet ministers and the core of BJP. The blame game got its oxygen for second round from the PM when he would blame congress in general and Nehru / Gandhi in particular for everything that happened or not happened in India after independence. PM would go on to say that from the time of Independence nothing ever has been done and hinted that it was only after 2014 when BJP came to power things moved ahead. This was a double edged sword, for one it was a fuel for the follower “Bhakts” for they would know what to say and what to tweet and which history and pictures to be dug up and morphed and tweeted and the second edge worked against them, for the people who had brains and use it would think if nothing ever happened in India what did my father and his father and their fathers did? Where they only breaking bed day and night and food would land automatically on their plate. If nothing was done why are we even here where we could dictate terms in foreign policy with first world countries, boast of being world’s biggest software and services providers, stand tall in space research, produce automobile indigenously etc etc.

These two things namely “Blame game” and “Dismissing Rahul Gandhi” has in fact worked just the opposite way and it has not only made the opposition voice stronger and increased its reliability quotient but also made Rahul Gandhi a tall leader, taller than most in the government and in reality a tad taller than the PM since apart from being a mass leader now, Rahul Gandhi was a kind, compassionate, composed, expressive and impromptu leader which the PM clearly lacks at least in the kind and compassionate terms if all others are arguable. This hasn’t gone down well with BJP especially PM and his Man-Friday Amit Shah who had envisaged that mocking, joking and dismissing Rahul Gandhi would beat his status further down and then Congress would be left leader less and it would break in fragments. That did not happen and in fact with every mock Rahul Gandhi would come out more strongly and make Modi-Shah think, were they even doing a right thing?

If I were chosen to represent my company in a leadership role and instead of making progress I would go to board meeting and rant about my predecessors and crib how my work is not done because it wasn’t done in last many years why the founders of the company did not do this or did not do that, I would be shown the door immediately not because I was blaming others but because I was not doing my work in lieu of others who were not even there to defend themselves.

Opposition, from all available data is lacking in funds, strength and unity and for a strong government with a clear majority in Loksabha and very strong numbers in Rajyasabha to blame them would be a mock on their own capacity and it would be insulting the mandate the people of India have given this government.

Now every time PM goes to a podium to speak we know, there would be blame, blame and further blame. No achievement to show only rants and grunts. Entire this term was wasted and no progress done because Nehru did not let Modi work, now even if (and it is a big IF) Modi comes back in 2019 who knows he would be haunted by Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv, Gujral et al.

So we rather choose another PM who would walk forward and not backward, use foresight and not rear view mirror. Make things work and not blame it on thee.

The Bhigwan Bird-Orgy

With the help of 4 alarms on 2 phones and a wake up call request to my mom to wake me up in the morning, which she religiously did, I woke up to a dark sky from my bedroom balcony, heavy head and an urge to snug into the blanket again and go back to sleep. But it was not to happen since I have made up my mind to visit the Bhigwan which I was only planning without inception since last two seasons and now it was the day I would visit it finally..

My friend (who was majorly behind concretizing of the idea) picked me up for the journey and after a couple of hour drive we reached Kranti Flamingo Point in Kumbhargaon, Bhigwan where we would find our Ultra-Knowledgeable guide and capitaine de navire Mr. Rahul who apart from his extensive know-how on birds was a nature lover and above all very accommodating and great guy to talk to.

We set sail and sun decided to rise with its beautiful rounded amber-colored robe and pose for us like a show stopper and it was just the start.

The sunrise was only the the foreplay and our multiple eye-orgasm was to come our way. First to come our way were a snag with a group of Heron having an early morning meeting.MMDM7478

A Ruddy Shelduck and couple of Brewer’s Blackbirds greeted us morning with their respective bright golden and purple-ish look..

Then came the other clans, some in groups and some lonesome beauties…
Like the Great Blue Heron, White Stork, The Egrets et al

It was then completely onto some more Great Blue Herons, The Painted Stork, Russian Coots, The Sacred Ibis, Indian Pond Heron and Egrets to put up a spectacular show for us.. Show we have never seen and perhaps would never see again soon.

The parting item were presented by Seagulls feeding on rice puffs and The great Heron with a dance we got mesmerized by and a sequential dive by the gulls…

We had the biggest kick out of this quick tour. Kids would enjoy so much from seeing the birds in their natural homes was a revelation to us and their curiosity and unique questions certainly had us mum like the cat got our tongue..
